Report from National Championships 2005

Hello everyone

Here is a short report on the 2005 Blind Indoor Bowls National Championships held in New Plymouth over last Labour Weekend.

There were 96 competitors taking part this year in the Nationals from 13 provinces around New Zealand.

The one thing I noticed most importantly this year, was, that there were many new bowlers that were there for the first time.
Because the game of indoor bowls is for the most part, played by the older members of our blind community, we have a large turnover of members from time to time and the last couple of years has been particularly high because of ill health and also large numbers of deaths unfortunately.

It is great to see these new players coming along to take part. I hope they enjoyed themselves and they will be looking forward to coming next year to Rotorua.

Apart from the Singles, which some of the players went up to the New Plymouth Club to play the open rounds, the rest of the tournament was played in the Belt Road Bowling hall which is I believe, is owned by the Taranaki Indoor Bowls Centre.
A very nice wooden floor to play on which is the best surface to play indoor bowls on in my opinion.

Mr. Syd Adlam was the hall controller for the weekend and he did a very good job with his helpers from the local Association at running a very smooth tournament.

Unfortunately this time, I was unable to make the Anural General Meeting on the Friday evening because of all the flights being cancelled into New Plymouth. I was forced to travel down on a bus which only left Auckland at 6:15 PM. So I didn’t arrive in New Plymouth until early the next morning. That made it a long weekend for me but never mind.

The meeting went well with my Vice President, Grace Wheeler taking the Chair for me in my absence.

We have quite a new look Executive this time with some new faces who have not been on the committee before.
This is the entire committee.
President, John Manchester, Vice President, Grace Wheeler, Secretary, Phyllis Fox, Treasurer, Joy Thompson and our new committee is, Owen Wilson from Napier, John Taylor from Canterbury, Jenny Fitzwater from Wellington and Ken Frederickson from Wanganui.
There is one less this time because we have no immediate Past President because of Joseph Twomey not wishing to remain on the committee. Joe’s health is not too good and he is finding the traveling to the meetings difficult. Thank you Joe, for all your years work on the committee. We will miss you Mate!
I will miss your humour too!
Thanks to Owen Palamountain for his work on the committee as well.
Welcome to the three new members of the committee.

It was very pleasing to me, to see that the local club from Taranaki was well represented in the trophy count. Well done club members.

While sitting in the Bar after finishing my rounds, it was interesting to hear the comments from the officials who were there watching through a big viewing window. They were saying how fantastic the competition was and how well the blind players played.
They were saying, they wished some of their sighted club members could see how well they played and how close their bowls are to the Jack so often.

The competition is very strong now and it is because, I think, a lot of our blind members still compete in sighted clubs in their own towns and Cities throughout the year. This gives them, that little edge when it comes to the big games.

Thank you to all our coaches and helpers for making it such a great tournament. And, a special thanks to all the volunteer drivers who got us there safely and back home again.
