Report from National Championships 2006

Hello everyone

The New Zealand Blind & Partially Sighted Indoor Bowls federation Inc. held their National Championships over Labour Weekend 2006 in Rotorua.

The venue this year was the Rotorua Sports Stadium.

92 competitors took part in fours, Pairs and Singles over three days.

Including the coaches and helpers, there would have been around 160 people in the stadium for the weekend.

We always start off the weekend on the Friday evening with our Annual General Meeting which was held this time in the Masonic Lodge rooms in Fenton Street Rotorua at 7:00pm

The full executive has been returned with the same people as last year.
They are as follows:
President John Manchester (Auckland), Vice President Grace Wheeler (Masterton), Secretary Phyllis Fox (Auckland), and Treasurer Joy Thompson (Christchgurch).
Committee, Jenny Fitzwater (Wellington), Ken Frederickson (Wanganui), John Taylor (Christchurch) and Owen Wilson (Taranaki).

On the Saturday morning theTournament was officially openend by the Rotorua Mayor, Mr Kevin Winters and an official welcome by the BINZ President.
Then we were under way, with the Open Pairs. Four rounds before lunch to find the qualifiers to go into the Post Section after lunch.

The main organizers of the Tournament this year, were Cheryl and Bruce Wiggins and the Hall Controller was Ted (last name unknown). These three officials plus a number of umpires are provided from the Rotorua Indoor Bowls Association.
There was also a representative from the St John Ambulance present each day.

Just after lunch, around half of the players went into the Post Section to play off in a sudden death system to find the winners.
Those who didn't qualify, were able to enter in a consolation tournament while the play offs were going on.
The winners of the consolation rounds were Ken Joyce and JohnManchetser of Auckland.

The Sunday was the day for all the Singles to be played for.
The Totally Blind have their own section, Men and Women separately as do the Partially Sighted Men and Women.
Then at the end of the day, the Totally Blind winners come together to play for the Champ of Champions. So do the two Partially Sighted winners.

Labour Day, is the final day, where the fours are played out.

Four rounds of Open Fours are played off before lunch and 8 teams out of 20 qualified to go through to Post Section after lunch.
As with the Pairs, there was a consolation round offered for those who didn't qualify.
The winners of the Consolation Fours were, a team from Wellington.

My thanks to Shirley Teirney, the lady from the Rotorua Blind Indoor Bowls Club who organised the Tournament this year for us.
Shirley put together the programme, organised the caterers, the accommodation and was the local contact person for us with theRotorua Indoor Bowls Association.

I am sure all the bowlers are already looking forward to the next Nationals, which are planned to be in Wanganui, next labour Weekend.
